Certo Sguardo d'Italia ( A Certain Glance at Italy)

Art Reception: June 15th

Photographs by Cynthia Clark
Clark’s
images
seduce the viewer to explore the country, physically and
artistically from a different perspective. Looking at her group
of photos, one instinctively turns around or steps back for
orientation. For this exhibit, Clark photographed Italy with an
eye tilted towards the caught detail, the peripheral glance, the
never yet ever- changing language and culture of Italy past and
present, the fading rural world of the contadini, the
sense of the timeless. These images are juxtaposed with the
ultra-modern but uniquely Italian moda of Milan. Some of
the images are purposefully obstructed – a reflection in a
window or a balcony or statue between us and the photographed
object as a metaphor of a layered Italy.
