Salter HealthCare Services was founded by Gershon Salter in
1956. In the past 50 years he and his family have applied
their determination and commitment to meet the changing
health care needs of the community. They have succeeded in
building a network of facilities which have set new
standards of quality care. Their reputation for excellence
is acknowledged by the health care community, as well as the
thousands of patients and families they have served.
Gershon
Salter purchased the Woburn Nursing Center, a 30 bed rest home
in Woburn, in 1956. During the 1960's, Mr. Salter added on to
that facility increasing the number of beds to 110. In 1976, he
purchased the Winchester Nursing Center from the Winchester
Hospital. In 1979, he built the Aberjona Nursing Center.
Gershon Salter was joined by his sons, Robert in 1979 and
Richard in 1984.Together they have met the challenges presented
by health care reform with innovation and expansion.
In
1986, the Winchester Nursing Center
was renovated and remodeled to increase the bed count to 121 and
convert previous storage space into a Therapy Gym. Once again in
2005, based on the need to provide more intense rehabilitation
the therapy gym under went a significant expansion. Today’s
therapy gym features modern equipment and ample space in our
effort to provide the quality services that will allow more
patients to rehabilitate quickly and return to their homes.
In
1991, the Woburn Nursing Center
added a 65 bed wing. Thirty-five of the new beds were used to
thin out the overcrowded 3 and 4 bed rooms on the existing
facility, and the other additional 30 licensed beds increased
the total count to the current 140 bed total.
In
1994, the Woburn Nursing Center
developed a Sub-Acute unit obtaining both Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Commission on
accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities Sub-Acute
certifications.
Having built the Aberjona Nursing Center from the ground up, the
Salter’s were able to incorporate many of their ground breaking
programs into this 123 bed facility. However, because of the
numerous ongoing challenges in health care two new programs have
been introduced at the Aberjona. The first was the opening of 41
bed Alzheimer unit. This is a secure unit that provides special
training to all the staff members. In addition the entire
rehabilitation space was completely renovated in 2005.This new
space has allowed the therapy program to rapidly expand and
today provides sub-acute/rehabilitation to hundreds of patients
that return home after a short stay.
The
Salter’s have worked to improve and expand the services provided
at all three facilities. Salter HealthCare has innovatively
grown in scope of services offered to meet the unique needs of
medically complex, rehabilitation and long term patients. Salter
Healthcare facilities are continually being upgraded and
renovated to incorporate the finest equipment and comfortable
surroundings.
The
caliber and extensive training of Salter HealthCare staff have
established new standards of care that are now being replicated
by others in the industry. The expanded services to high acuity
and rehabilitative patients are breaking new ground while
responding to the need for continuum of care.
On
November 11, 1996 Gershon Salter passed away but the traditions
of excellence and commitment to the community he worked so hard
to establish now live on in the administration and staff of the
three Salter HealthCare facilities.
Robert and Richard Salter are looking toward a future of
continued growth, innovative service expansion and continuation
of superior care and cost efficiency standards.
