Local Nursing Center Recognized By National Organization For Providing Quality Care

Winchester Rehabilitation and Nursing Center was recently recognized by the American Health Care Association’s (AHCA) Quality Initiative Recognition Program for the Center’s progress on quality initiative goals and other metrics.

Owned and managed by Salter HealthCare, the Winchester Center is a 121-bed rehabilitation and skilled nursing center located at 223 Swanton Street. The Center was commended by the AHCA for increasing the stability of staff and for reducing hospital readmissions.

The Quality Initiative is an effort that builds upon the existing work of the long-term and post-acute care field by setting specific, measurable targets to further improve quality of care in America’s skilled nursing centers and assisted living communities.

In a letter to the Winchester Center’s staff, Dr. David Gifford, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at AHCA said, “Congratulations, again, for your extraordinary efforts in meeting measurable targets which improve the lives of the people you serve. Your achievement inspires others and invigorates our work here at AHCA.”

According to the AHCA’s web site, “Those who work most closely with residents are at the core of providing quality care and achieving better outcomes. Research shows that satisfied and happy staffs provide better quality care and contribute to greater quality of life for the residents in skilled nursing centers. The more consistent and dedicated the staff is, the more they understand and are able to effectively respond to each individual’s care needs, reinforcing the long-term care profession’s commitment to delivering person-centered care.”

In terms of reducing hospital readmissions, the AHCA maintains that, “Hospitalization is disruptive to elderly patients and puts them at greater risk for complications and infections. Hospitalization also increases the likelihood of reduced functioning on return to the skilled nursing facility.”

“We are fortunate to have many dedicated staff members who take great pride in working with individual patients to achieve the best quality outcomes possible. Working as a team the staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, has been successful helping patients avoid unnecessary trips to the emergency room,” noted Bob Driscoll, Salter HealthCare’s Chief Operating Officer.
